You need to combine learning by thinking and learning by doing. If it's all doing, the doing will be uninformed by theory and thus the actions taken will not be flexible enough (because we all have a limited set of experiences). If it's all thinking, the theory will be uninformed by real world tests. I say learn a bit from books and then test it. Or learn a bit by doing and then go to books to get a broader perspective.
